Customer reviews
Been using Zara Spooks for over 20 years and they never disappoint. The walk-the-dog action is unmatched once you get the wrist snap down. Landed several trophy bass on this lure this spring.
Love the action and casting distance on this lure. Only complaint is the stock hooks could be sharper out of the box. I swapped mine for upgraded trebles and it's perfect now.
Not just for bass - I've caught several northern pike on this thing in early morning topwater bites. The rattle really seems to call fish in from deeper water.
As a newer angler, it took me a few outings to get the rhythm right for the walk-the-dog retrieve. Once I did, the strikes started coming. Durable and well-made lure.
This has been my most productive topwater lure for largemouth bass in weedy lakes. The through-wire construction gives me confidence when fighting bigger fish near cover.
The Heddon Zara Spook stands as one of the most iconic topwater lures in fishing history, a cigar-shaped hard bait designed to master the legendary "walk the dog" retrieve that has fooled bass, pike, and saltwater gamefish for generations. Crafted from durable plastic with a weighted internal ballast system, the Zara Spook sits nose-up in the water at rest, ready to spring into its signature zigzag dance the moment a rhythmic twitch of the rod tip sets it in motion. Its slender, streamlined profile mimics an injured baitfish skittering across the surface, triggering aggressive reaction strikes from predators lurking below, and the lure's ability to cover water quickly makes it a favorite for searching out active fish across open flats, along grass lines, and around submerged structure. Built with a through-wire construction that runs from the nose to the tail, the Zara Spook is engineered to withstand the punishing runs and headshakes of trophy-class fish without pulling apart at the hardware. Twin treble hooks, typically finished in sharp, corrosion-resistant steel, hang from sturdy screw-eyes that are reinforced to prevent pull-out during hard fights, while the internal rattle chamber produces a distinct clacking sound that adds an auditory dimension to the lure's surface commotion, calling fish in from greater distances even in stained or low-visibility water. The buoyant body rides high, allowing anglers to work it steadily over shallow cover without snagging, and its versatility spans dawn topwater blitzes to calm evening presentations when fish are keying in on subtle surface movement. Available in a wide range of colors from natural shad and bone finishes to bold chartreuse and fire-tiger patterns, the Zara Spook lets anglers match local forage or select high-visibility options for tracking the lure's action from a distance. Its size options accommodate everything from largemouth and smallmouth bass to striped bass, redfish, and even musky when scaled up, making it a staple tackle box item across freshwater and inshore saltwater fishing alike. Anglers prize the lure not only for its proven fish-catching pedigree stretching back decades but also for the visceral thrill of watching a violent surface strike unfold in real time, cementing the Heddon Zara Spook's reputation as a timeless, must-have topwater weapon for anyone serious about reading and exploiting the strike zone.
